English – Reading and Writing

Reading and Writing Overview

At Huncote Primary School, we aim to develop confident, enthusiastic and skilled readers, writers and speakers. Through a carefully sequenced and knowledge-rich curriculum, pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 build the vocabulary, knowledge and communication skills they need to succeed across the curriculum and in later life.

Using the Oak National Academy English curriculum as the foundation for our long-term planning, pupils engage with a diverse range of high-quality texts, including traditional tales, classic literature, modern fiction, poetry and non-fiction. Through these texts, pupils develop a love of reading, broaden their understanding of the world and encounter a rich variety of voices, cultures and experiences.

We believe that strong literacy foundations are essential for future success. Therefore, our curriculum places a strong emphasis on reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, grammar, spelling and handwriting. Alongside their English lessons, pupils have dedicated opportunities to develop their reading fluency and practise techniques for answering comprehension questions. Pupils also enjoy First Chapter Friday, where they are introduced to a wide range of books and authors, as well as daily opportunities to read for pleasure. Knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced so that learning builds progressively across each year group, enabling pupils to become increasingly confident and independent readers and writers.

Oracy is embedded throughout our English curriculum, providing regular opportunities for pupils to discuss, explain, perform, present and debate. By developing their spoken language, pupils learn to express their ideas clearly, listen respectfully to others and communicate effectively in different contexts.

Our curriculum is ambitious for all learners. Through high-quality teaching, appropriate scaffolding and carefully planned challenge, we ensure that every pupil can access the curriculum and achieve their full potential. By the end of Year 6, pupils leave Huncote Primary School as fluent readers, effective writers and confident communicators who are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
