French Overview
At Huncote Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language broadens children’s horizons and helps them develop an appreciation of different cultures and ways of life. Our French curriculum is designed to foster curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in language learning, while providing children with the knowledge and skills needed to communicate in another language.
French is taught throughout Key Stage 2 using the Rigolo programme, which provides a carefully sequenced progression of vocabulary, grammar and language skills. Through engaging lessons, pupils develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while exploring a range of everyday topics such as numbers, colours, food, hobbies, travel and life in France.
Children are encouraged to communicate confidently through songs, games, conversations and role-play activities. As their knowledge develops, they begin to understand and use increasingly complex vocabulary and sentence structures, applying their learning in both spoken and written contexts. Visual prompts, repetition and regular opportunities for practice help pupils build fluency and confidence over time.
Learning a language also supports wider cultural understanding. Through their study of French, children gain an appreciation of French-speaking countries and cultures, helping them to develop respect, curiosity and awareness of the wider world.
By the end of Year 6, pupils leave Huncote Primary School with a secure foundation in French and the confidence to communicate using familiar vocabulary and phrases. They are well prepared for the next stage of language learning and have developed a positive attitude towards languages that will support them throughout their future education.
