Art & Design Overview
At Huncote Primary School, we believe that Art and Design provides children with opportunities to express themselves creatively, develop their imagination and build confidence in their own ideas. Our curriculum encourages pupils to explore, experiment and take creative risks while developing an appreciation of art, craft and design from a wide range of cultures, periods and traditions.
Using the Grammarsaurus Art curriculum as the foundation for our long-term planning, pupils develop their artistic knowledge and skills progressively from Year 1 to Year 6. Children are introduced to a range of artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printing and mixed media, allowing them to explore different techniques and materials while developing their own unique style and creativity.
Through the study of both historical and contemporary artists, designers and craftspeople, pupils learn how art reflects and shapes the world around us. They are encouraged to analyse, discuss and evaluate artwork, developing their understanding of artistic processes and the impact that art can have on individuals and communities.
Practical, hands-on experiences are at the heart of our curriculum. Children are given regular opportunities to investigate ideas, experiment with techniques, refine their work and reflect on their creative journey. Lessons are designed to be inclusive and accessible, enabling all pupils to experience success and develop confidence as artists.
By the end of Year 6, pupils leave Huncote Primary School with a broad range of artistic skills, an understanding of significant artists and art forms, and the confidence to express their ideas creatively. They develop an appreciation of the role of art in enriching lives and understanding the world, fostering a lifelong enjoyment of creative expression.
