Early Reading Overview
At Huncote Primary School, we believe that reading is the key to unlocking all areas of learning and is an essential life skill. Our Early Reading curriculum is designed to ensure that every child becomes a confident, fluent and enthusiastic reader who develops a lifelong love of books and reading.
We teach early reading through the Department for Education approved Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised systematic synthetic phonics programme. Through daily phonics teaching, carefully matched reading books and targeted support where needed, children develop the knowledge and skills required to decode, read with fluency and understand what they read.
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. Alongside phonics, children are immersed in a rich reading culture through daily story time, high-quality texts and regular opportunities to talk about books. We strive to develop both the skills needed to read successfully and a genuine enjoyment of reading for pleasure.
Children participate in regular reading practice sessions using books closely matched to their phonics knowledge, allowing them to experience success and develop confidence as readers. Any child requiring additional support receives timely intervention to ensure they keep up with their peers and continue to make strong progress.
By the end of Key Stage 1, we aim for all children to be fluent readers who can decode unfamiliar words, read with understanding and expression, and use reading as a tool for learning across the curriculum. We want our pupils to leave Huncote as confident readers who choose to read for both pleasure and purpose.
