Intent

At Huncote Primary School, the Geography curriculum is designed to inspire children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, igniting a lifelong love of learning. Geography sits at the heart of our curriculum, enabling pupils to explore over 20 places across the United Kingdom and every continent, deepening their understanding of diverse environments, cultures, resources, and communities. Through the study of both human and physical geography, children develop essential knowledge and transferable skills that support learning across the wider curriculum. As an inherently investigative subject, geography encourages pupils to ask questions, think critically, and build a secure understanding of key physical and human processes, as well as the interactions between people and the planet. Our intent is to equip children with a strong sense of place—locally, nationally and globally—while fostering environmental responsibility, global awareness, and an understanding of their role within an ever‑changing world.

Implementation

Geography at Huncote Primary School is taught through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum that aligns with the National Curriculum and is supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. Learning is sequenced year by year to ensure pupils build securely on prior knowledge while developing the full range of skills needed to become confident geographers. Children are fully immersed in all aspects of the subject through high‑quality teaching that nurtures essential geographical characteristics, including a strong understanding of where places are and what they are like, both locally and globally, and a clear awareness of how places are interconnected and interdependent. Throughout each unit, pupils engage in meaningful geographical enquiry, using questioning, research, data interpretation, and effective presentation techniques to reach well‑reasoned conclusions. Fieldwork, map work, observation, local area studies, digital technologies, and first‑hand investigations are embedded to develop excellent practical skills. Key concepts—place, space, scale, and interdependence—are regularly revisited to deepen knowledge and strengthen vocabulary. Across all learning, teachers use engaging questions, high‑quality texts, and diverse resources to bring geography to life, encouraging pupils to develop curiosity, critical thinking, and well‑balanced opinions about contemporary environmental and societal issues.

Assessment in Geography
Assessment in Geography is continuous and embedded within our teaching. Teachers monitor understanding throughout lessons and across each unit to ensure every child is making progress. At the end of each unit, pupils complete a short review activity or check, which helps consolidate learning and identify next steps. These outcomes feed into our termly data reviews, providing a clear picture of progress and informing future planning.
