Design Technology
Design & Technology Overview
At Huncote Primary School, we believe that Design and Technology equips children with the creativity, knowledge and practical skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our curriculum encourages pupils to become innovative thinkers, problem-solvers and resilient learners who can design, create and evaluate products for real purposes and audiences.
Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils develop their understanding of the design process by researching, generating ideas, planning, making and evaluating products. They are encouraged to think critically about their work, refine their designs and learn from both successes and challenges. This process helps children develop independence, creativity and confidence in their ability to solve problems.
Children experience a broad range of design and technology disciplines, including food and nutrition, textiles, structures and mechanisms. Through practical, hands-on learning, pupils develop technical knowledge and skills while learning how design and technology impacts everyday life. Opportunities to apply learning from other subjects, including mathematics, computing and English, help children see the purpose and relevance of their knowledge in meaningful contexts.
Our curriculum provides regular opportunities for pupils to work collaboratively, communicate their ideas effectively and develop perseverance when adapting and improving their designs. Through evaluation and reflection, children learn to consider how products can be improved to better meet the needs of users.
By the end of Year 6, pupils leave Huncote Primary School with a secure understanding of the design process, a broad range of practical skills and the confidence to approach challenges creatively. They are equipped with the resilience, innovation and problem-solving skills that will support them throughout their future education and beyond.
