Mathematics Overview

At Huncote Primary School, we believe that mathematics is a vital life skill that enables children to make sense of the world around them, think logically and solve problems with confidence. Our Maths curriculum is designed to develop confident, resilient and capable mathematicians who enjoy challenge and are able to apply their learning across a range of contexts.

Using the Power Maths mastery approach as the foundation for our curriculum, pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through carefully sequenced learning from Year 1 to Year 6. We aim for all children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, reason mathematically and solve problems by applying their knowledge and skills in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Lessons are structured to promote deep understanding rather than superficial coverage. Through the use of concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract methods, pupils build secure mathematical foundations and develop confidence in explaining their thinking. Children are encouraged to make connections between different areas of mathematics, use precise mathematical vocabulary and communicate their reasoning clearly.

Alongside Power Maths, teachers draw upon high-quality resources from White Rose Maths, NCETM and NRICH to enrich learning and provide opportunities for deeper thinking, investigation and problem solving. Regular retrieval practice helps children secure key knowledge and make links with previous learning, supporting long-term retention.

We believe that all children can succeed in mathematics. Through high expectations, effective support and appropriate challenge, pupils develop perseverance, resilience and a positive mindset towards mathematical learning. Children are encouraged to take risks, learn from mistakes and approach problems with confidence.

By the end of Year 6, pupils leave Huncote Primary School as fluent mathematicians who can reason, solve problems and apply their learning effectively. They have developed the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the next stage of their education and use mathematics successfully in everyday life.

Learning at home

There are lots of different websites and apps available to support with children’s numeracy knowledge and providing opportunities to practise key skills.

The White Rose One Minute Maths app matches the methods used in school and is a quick and familiar way for children to carry on their learning at home. Click the image to read more about it.

Times Tables Rockstars

This is an invaluable resource to get all children fluent in their timestables and can be accessed through the following link. Children from Year 1 to Year 6 have a log on for this. If you have lost your log on, please message your class teacher on Class Dojo. Click the image to load TTRS.

The following link will also allow access to a parent’s guide that will give you a bit more information about how it works and how children move up the leader board.

Numbots

This is a resource that will improve your child’s recall and understanding of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts using different representations. Click  the image to load Numbots.
