Music Overview
At Huncote Primary School, we believe that music is a powerful form of expression that enriches children’s lives, develops creativity and builds confidence. Our Music curriculum is designed to inspire a love of music while providing opportunities for all pupils to perform, listen, compose and appreciate music from a wide range of genres, cultures and traditions.
Using the Oak National Academy Music curriculum as the foundation for our long-term planning, pupils develop their musical knowledge and skills progressively from Year 1 to Year 6. Through singing, listening, performing, composing and appraising, children build an understanding of the key elements of music, including pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre and structure.
Music is an active and practical subject at Huncote. Pupils are encouraged to participate fully in musical experiences, developing confidence, teamwork and communication skills through collaborative performance and composition. A weekly whole-school singing assembly provides regular opportunities to develop vocal skills, learn a wide repertoire of songs and experience the enjoyment of making music together.
The curriculum is enriched through a variety of performance opportunities across the school year. Children take part in Christmas concerts, nativities and year-group productions, allowing them to develop their confidence as performers and share their musical talents with the wider school community. Instrumental opportunities and additional musical experiences further enhance pupils’ appreciation and enjoyment of music.
As pupils progress through the school, they learn to listen critically to a wide range of music, explore how music is created and structured, and develop their own compositions using increasingly sophisticated musical techniques. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build upon prior knowledge, ensuring children develop both technical skills and a deeper appreciation of music’s role in different cultures and communities.
By the end of Year 6, pupils leave Huncote Primary School with a secure understanding of key musical concepts, the confidence to perform and create music, and an appreciation of music as a valuable part of human expression. We aim for every child to develop a lifelong enjoyment of music and the confidence to continue their musical journey beyond primary school.
